Mja Tohki

Appearance and Personality

A carefree individual stricken with wanderlust, who loves nothing more than to share stories of her travels with her friends and loved ones… and anyone else who wants to listen.

Despite being somewhat frail with poor physical constitution due to a severe illness during her childhood, Mja has much the same matronly figure as her mother; though her ears never developed proper muscles, and are lopped as a result, she can still make them wiggle a bit as she'll happily demonstrate. While her natural hair color is platinum silver, she chooses to dye it red after the events of Shadowbringers, matching the color from her memories.
Her eyes were originally a dusky twilight cerulean, but after having her illness cured began to regain a orange hue, like the gentle setting sun her ancient beloved remembered. After rejoining with Ardbert, they begin to glow softly.

She grew up in a forest near Ilsabard, which was wiped off of the map early in the Garlean Empire's founding—most of the forest was used up to build Garlemald's structures, and any survivors from the Tohki tribe were either forcibly inducted into the Empire as slaves or fled into the mountains.

Before she was a decade old, she was incredibly ill until one day her tribe was visited by a mysterious man who introduced himself after the fact as Solus. Whilst curing her condition(which he did without forming any sort of consensus with theo thers), he also implanted her memories of a bygone time back into her, though at the time they were repressed as a fever-dream, rather than her ending up a “proper” ascian like the others.

As a result, much of her personality overlaps with or is otherwise indistinguishable from Persephone(Azem)'s, though she still grew up and 'naturally' accepted herself as a singular individual. This only crops up as an issue of identity once she becomes involved in the conflict that sweeps over Eorzea, against Garlemald and the ascians looming behind the Empire.

Mja possesses incredible magical talent, far beyond the ken of what the other thaumaturges of Ul'Dah's guild are capable of assisting with. This naturally garnered her the attention of both the Flames and the Scions, though the latter were somewhat mistrusting of her at first due to her suspect nature—though her pure-hearted innocence ultimately won them over after many trials.
Unfortunately, though she's incredibly gifted… she's excessively bad at explaining how she manages to do the things she does, lacking the vocabulary and understanding to accompany her intuitive talents.

Growing up in a matriarchal society as the daughter of the village head, Mja has practically no concept of money, and even after receiving several lessons from Tataru, she still finds the notion behind fiat currency to be somewhat ridiculous when there are needs that must be met to survive and thrive.
She's often put on the bench alongside Estinien when it comes to shopping.

Often assumed to be far younger than she is, thanks to her relatively recent debut in polite society, Mja ends up being treated rather like a child, despite the fact that she acts in a nurturing and (perhaps overly) protective manner to near most everyone she ends up remotely close to, as both learned behavior from her mother and as her past life's role (at first subconsciously) guides her to be.

She also tends to be rather… playful, often trying to find the fun in things and tease smiles out of people when she can.

Persephone

An ancient, sister of Hythlodaeus and wife of Hades. She had hair like fire and eyes the color of the evening sun, brightest just before dusk.

Perhaps the only significant distinction between her and Mja is that Persephone had a better understanding of cultural standards. In truth, she was actually less capable than most ancients when it came to creation magic, but her “sheer overwhelming passion,” as her brother put it, overcame the differences and propelled her to be one of the greatest weavers of aether of their age.
…Regrettably (for her brother and spouse) she was even worse at explaining herself than Mja is, when it came to weaving magics.

Ironically, or perhaps fittingly, she was also a sickly child—due to a lack of aether rather than a surfeit. Considered somewhat ghostly by her peers—for even being lesser meant standing out just as much—her brother did much to support her, which led to her cheery demeanor all the same.

As an ancient, her role was fittingly to help guide those who decided their time had come back to the aetherial sea, so that they may rest and be molded anew. Thus, she happened to meet Hades after he inherited the seat of Emet-Selch, and the two quickly hit it off—despite the latter's grousing at her and her brother.

Relationships

Family

Unfortunately, Mja lost her tribe when the Garlean Empire first established itself and raided the forest they lived in. All of her tribeswomen in the village were slain, and she has no clue where any of the remaining survivors would have fled to or if they'd still be alive over half a century later.

Her twin brothers are still missing, and though her memories of Persephone have fully returned, she still views her “present” family as being just as important as the family she once lost—though she wanders the world seeking ever new horizons, she hopes to one day find the two of them in good health, so she can share all she's learned.

Scions

Papalymo — The first of the Scions Mja ever encountered, their first meeting was somewhat… perplexing, to the lalafel's chagrin. Initially wary of the woman's (at the time) gangly figure and gaunt, haunted expression, he assumed her to be an ascian by the aura she gave off. Over time, and after Louisoix's passing, he came to accept her as one of their own, and attempted to instill any sense of culture into the pitiable viera at all.

If only so she'd stop calling him a Mandrake.

Minfilia — Mja never quite saw eye-to-eye with the woman, as she thought they should at least attempt to speak with Elidibus further on matters regarding the echo, but she still regarded Minfilia as a companion and resolute soul.

When she gave herself up to Hydaelyn, Mja lamented the decision, blaming herself for pushing the woman to sacrificing herself to “yet another foolish god.”

Alphinaud — Initially, Mja views him with mild reproach, thinking him to be a child that refused to ever pause or pay heed to his elders words. After the events with the Crystal Braves, she saw his desire to avoid mistakes as a good thing, and acted softer and more encouraging to him.

Seeing him and his sister as the youngest members of the “Scion Tribe” as she puts it, she often acts like a doting matriarch over them, much to their insistence and dismay at being adult enough to care for themselves.

Alisae — As a fellow firebrand, Mja appreciates Alisae's gung-ho attitude. At the same time, meeting Alisae made Mja reflect on her own frailty and come to respect it, as otherwise she assumes she might've ended up just as hotheaded and impatient, constantly rushing in instead of taking the extra moment to think.

Due to Mja being part of triplets, she understands innately how frustrating it is to be mistaken for ones sibling, and surprisingly is unnaturally good at picking out whomst is whom between Alisae and her brother.

Y'shtola — Seeing a kindred spirit yearning for the world, Mja initially had quite a bit of trouble with Y'shtola, as she was a more kinesthetic seeker of knowledge, compared to the “Stuffy, bookish approach” that the miqote favored.

Eventually setting their differences aside and seeing the merit in each other's styles, the two became close friends, with Mja allowing herself to be mentored by the (relatively) young cat, due to her being far more capable with “structured magic” as Y'shtola puts it.

Once Y'shtola trades her physical sight for aetherial vision, she sees Mja for who and what she truly is, and though their trust is broken for a time, the two eventually reconcile and Mja promises to treat her as she would “her” own brother (a vow that confuses even Mja when she makes it), while Y'shtola vows to seek out a greater understanding of their world, and what the ascians truly are.
